Rec: PUSH by Sapphire

Recommending PUSH by Sapphire as a character study. The novel's written first person from the POV of an uneducated teenage girl who has two kids after her father raped her, one of them diagnosed with Down Syndrome. What's most interesting about the novel is that she consistently writes with spelling and grammatical errors, and additionally is able to show the perspective of the girl's mental handicap as well. I think it's a great writing reference since it's hard to find a first-person novel where the author is willing to really write as the character.

Keep an eye out for the film this fall; at the independent film festivals, it cleaned up in everything apparently. Mariah Carey apparently is an extraordinary actress.

Best,

Jay

This reminds me of another book I really want to read - The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night. It's written from the perspective of an autistic boy. Heard so many good things about it, but have yet to get my hands on a copy.

Addendum: Fuck Mariah Carey.

Fuck her personality, but gotta say I was impressed at the Michael Jackson tribute--she sounded exactly like ten-year-old Michael.
